Building for Content Editors: Why Designers and Developers Need To Care More

Drupal, WordPress, and other platforms have been shifting toward more intuitive, visual page builders, with tools like Experience Builder and the WordPress block editor (Gutenberg). While these tools promise to bring us closer to true WYSIWYG experiences, designers and developers still need to put careful thought into creating a great content editing experience. We, as builders of websites, can no longer afford to overlook how we implement the content editor’s interface.

In this session, we'll dive into why it's time for designers and developers to rethink—or think about, in general—the content editing experience. We’ll explore the need for advocates within our dev and design teams, how content editors can actively participate in the process, and how to support large content editor teams with a more curated set of options and features. We’ll also cover best practices for developing these experiences. Ultimately, we’ll show how a great content editor experience can lead to faster, more efficient, and more compliant content creation.

Whether you're building in Drupal, WordPress, or another platform, this session will challenge you to rethink how we design and build for content creation.

Prerequisites

An understanding of content management systems and content editing. Experience with page builders is helpful but not at all required.
